Improving drainage in the lawn

My husband has been on a mission to improve the drainage in our (admittedly usually rather waterlogged) lawn.  He has mowed it twice, scarified it (dull job that, I followed behind with the trolley so he could put all the thatch in there), put holes in the lawn and started spreading sand all over it.

Unfortunately, it started raining almost as soon as he started putting sand on the ground so he had to abandon that job until the ground had dried out a bit.

  1. Did your bloke use hollow tines or did he just spike the lawn?

Do you know if you have good soil a fair way down or do you have a clay table just under the surface? Clay will cause the water stay on top longer rather than filtering down.
