Speaking of ways to entertain yourself during January, I really loved The Children Act by Ian McEwan. I won’t summarise the plot (annoying) but it’s basically about a high court judge working in family law. I’ve included the Guardian’s review in there link above.
Also, I’ve finished White Heat, which was about an Inuit guide, working in the arctic, who solves a murder. I met the author on the train randomly in November, which is what brought me to this book. I knew virtually nothing about the arctic or Inuit people so I feel as though I got a lot out of this.
A third book I’ve read recently was “Tokyo” or “The Devil of Nanking”. It was a good book but, frankly, deeply unpleasant in places (perhaps unsurprisingly).
